After more than 40 years serving the Victorian community, 同性恋色情 (AV) Paramedic Greg Iles has stepped into retirement with the same steady calm that defined his career.
These days his time is filled with coffee catch ups, reconnecting with former colleagues and a new role as the resident handyman at his local primary school. 鈥淚鈥檝e got plenty to keep me occupied,鈥 he said with a laugh, a familiar sound to anyone who worked alongside him.
Greg鈥檚 journey into paramedicine began in 1984. He was in his early twenties, newly married and thinking about starting a family. The job he had at the time wasn鈥檛 going to provide the stability he and his wife Sue needed.
His brother Peter, already working in the ambulance service, encouraged him to give it a go. 鈥淲e wanted to have a family, and I was grateful to find a job that was stable and paid well,鈥 Greg recalls.
That practical decision turned into a lifelong vocation that shaped his family, his friendships and his future.
Over the years, Greg served as a Senior Reserve Paramedic, spending much of his time filling staffing gaps across the Metro 2 Region. Although his home branch was Hastings, he worked wherever he was needed.
Greg鈥檚 initiation into the job was anything but gentle. 鈥淚 was involved in some pretty nasty trauma jobs early on,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ack then, serious road trauma was far more common and weekly fatalities were not unusual.鈥
Over the decades, he watched the landscape change. The introduction of the 0.05 blood alcohol limit, mandatory seatbelts, airbags and improved vehicle design all contributed to a steady decline in severe crashes. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 a quick change,鈥 he explained. 鈥淏ut all those things together reduced road trauma significantly.鈥
Despite the difficult cases, Greg鈥檚 career is filled with memories that still make him smile. He has helped deliver more than 30 babies, and he speaks warmly of the friendships he formed, many of which have lasted well beyond his final shift.
Then there are the unusual cases. One that stands out involved a child trapped inside a washing machine. 鈥淔irefighters assisted with that one and we safely removed the patient,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he child was so tired they fell asleep in there!鈥
Today, he is looking forward to spending more time with Sue and their eight grandchildren, all between the ages of four and 11.
For new paramedics entering the service, Greg鈥檚 advice comes from experience and humility.
鈥淐ommunicate with the person you鈥檙e working with,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hink about how you speak and act. Go with the flow.鈥
